According to a report from NBC News on Wednesday, Kaepernick recounts how he learned of Roc Nation’s NFL agreement only after it had been finalized, despite their regular communication. It was during this period that Kaepernick reportedly conveyed his deep reservations to Jay-Z, articulating a stark critique of the move. "I just want you to know," Kaepernick stated, as recalled in the interview, "one, you’re serving the culture up to a bunch of racists, and two, they don’t care about you. You’re the music guy to them. They quite literally need a Black face—and have said as much."
Kaepernick, who became a prominent figure for his activism against racial injustice and police brutality through his on-field protests, underscored the profound implications of Jay-Z’s decision to align with the NFL, an organization he contends actively blackballed him for his stance. He drew a direct parallel to a 2017 players-owners meeting where, according to Kaepernick, the league explicitly sought a "Black face to help us get rid of the protests." Kaepernick used his interview with Holt to directly address this assertion, clarifying that he did not, in fact, sign a non-disparagement agreement. He further suggested that Jay-Z’s decision to name-drop him in the freestyle was indicative of a "guilty conscience," a sentiment he believes stems from partnering with entities such as the NFL and, more recently, the retail giant Target.
"First and foremost, what it speaks to is power of people," Kaepernick told Holt. He emphasized that the significant public backlash Jay-Z faced for his 2019 NFL partnership, which was perceived by many as running counter to the interests of the community, had a substantial impact. Kaepernick suggested that this criticism continues to resonate, noting, "The backlash that [Jay-Z] received for partnering with the NFL and going counter to people’s interests in 2019 was a major problem for him, so much so that he’s still bringing it up."

"People are now realizing, ‘Why are you so comfortable stepping into these positions that are counter to the positions that people on the ground actually want?’" Kaepernick questioned. "And to me, I view that as speaking to a guilty conscience and trying to reposition or reframe the conversation."
