The legal battle between artist and producer Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, and a former contractor, Tony Saxon, is now in the hands of a jury. A trial commenced today, February 23rd, with jury selection underway in Los Angeles, centering on Saxon’s claim for $1 million in damages. The proceedings, which will not be televised, aim to resolve accusations of unpaid wages, hazardous working conditions, and wrongful termination.
Saxon’s lawsuit, initially filed in September 2023, details a tumultuous period of employment that began in September 2021. He was engaged as a project manager for the extensive renovation of a Malibu mansion, a property Ye acquired for $57.3 million that same year. This ambitious project, designed by architect Tadao Ando, involved significant structural changes, including the demolition of the kitchen and all five bathrooms, the controversial transformation of a staircase into a slide, and a complete shutdown of the property’s electrical systems. According to Saxon’s legal filings, he and Ye had agreed upon a weekly salary of $20,000. However, Saxon alleges that he only received two payments during his tenure.
The 40-page lawsuit paints a grim picture of the work environment. Saxon claims he was compelled to reside within the partially demolished mansion, sleeping on a makeshift bed, and enduring grueling 16-hour workdays. He further alleges a disturbing incident where he awoke to find Ye standing over him in the middle of the night. The situation reportedly escalated in early November 2021 when Saxon sustained a severe back injury. Despite his request for time off to recover, Saxon claims Ye insisted that renovation work continue unabated, even in the presence of his injury.
The situation culminated on November 5, 2021, when Saxon reportedly informed Ye about the perilous conditions at the construction site. Shortly thereafter, he was terminated from his role. The Malibu mansion, which had undergone significant deconstruction, was subsequently sold by Ye in September 2024 for $21 million, a stark contrast to its initial purchase price.
Saxon’s claim for damages exceeds $1 million, encompassing not only the alleged unpaid wages and lost earning potential but also compensation for medical expenses incurred due to his injury and for emotional distress stemming from the experience.
Ron Zambrano, Tony Saxon’s attorney and a partner at West Coast Employment Lawyers, articulated the severity of the claims in a statement issued in September 2024. He asserted that Ye exhibited a "reckless disregard toward his employees" and acted in "unbelievably dangerous ways" throughout the Malibu project. Zambrano emphasized that no employee should be subjected to the conditions Saxon allegedly endured, highlighting Ye’s alleged lack of concern and his insistence on the completion of work despite the hazardous and illegal nature of some demands. Saxon’s refusal to compromise his safety and ethical standards, Zambrano contended, led to his dismissal and the withholding of owed compensation.
Ye has formally denied the allegations presented in Saxon’s complaint. Adding another layer to the unfolding legal drama, Ye’s wife, Bianca Censori, is reportedly expected to provide testimony during the trial, according to information from TMZ. Her involvement as a witness could shed further light on the events that transpired during the renovation project.
The trial represents a significant legal challenge for Ye, bringing to the forefront accusations of labor law violations and unsafe working environments. The outcome of this case could have implications for how high-profile individuals manage their construction and renovation projects and their obligations to contracted workers.
