The verdict, delivered by a Los Angeles jury on Friday, September 11th, brought an end to proceedings that captivated the hip-hop community and legal observers alike. The jury reached their decision after three days of deliberations, finding the 33-year-old artist, whose real name is Durk D. Banks, free from the grave accusations leveled against him.
While Lil Durk emerged victorious in this particular legal chapter, his co-defendants, Deandre Dontrell Wilson, also known as OTF Dede, and David Brian Lindsey, or Browneyez, were convicted on charges of stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking. Crucially, both Wilson and Lindsey were also acquitted of the most serious charge: the murder-for-hire accusation. Despite his acquittal, Lil Durk is not expected to be released from custody immediately, as he faces a pending RICO charge in a separate trial.
The emotional weight of the verdict was palpable in the courtroom. Reports indicate that upon hearing the not guilty verdict, Lil Durk became visibly emotional, reportedly shedding tears. His wife, India Royale, was seen embracing his mother in the second row of the gallery, both of whom were also overcome with emotion. The scene underscored the immense pressure and personal toll the trial had taken on the rapper and his family.
The jury’s deliberation process spanned three days, with jurors dedicating nearly eight hours to meticulously reviewing the evidence presented throughout the trial. Their engagement with the case was evident in the notes they submitted to the judge. On the first day of deliberation, September 9th, the jury requested all trial evidence in a digital format, a request that necessitated time to compile and deliver. This digital archive was subsequently provided to the jurors on the morning of September 10th.
Further demonstrating their thoroughness, the jury sought clarification on the second day of deliberations, September 10th. They specifically requested a review of jury instructions pertaining to the charge of conspiracy to commit stalking. Additionally, they asked for a precise legal definition of the term "intent," highlighting the nuanced legal interpretations involved in their decision-making.
The jury was tasked with considering five distinct counts during their deliberations. These included conspiracy to commit stalking, stalking Quando Rondo with a dangerous weapon, stalking Saviay’a "Lul Pab" Robinson resulting in death, conspiracy to use interstate commerce facilities in a murder-for-hire plot that resulted in Pab’s death, and the direct use of interstate commerce facilities in a murder-for-hire plot that resulted in Pab’s death.
Lil Durk’s legal troubles began with his arrest on October 17, 2024, in South Florida. He was accused of orchestrating a plot to have five men kill fellow rapper Quando Rondo in 2022. Although the alleged intended target, Quando Rondo, was not harmed, Saviay’a "Lul Pab" Robinson, Rondo’s cousin, was tragically killed during the incident. Prosecutors contended that this alleged act of violence was carried out in retaliation for the November 2020 shooting death of King Von, a close associate of Lil Durk, who was killed in an altercation in Atlanta. Timothy "Lul Timm" Leeks, an associate of Quando Rondo, was charged in connection with King Von’s death.
In addition to Lil Durk, several individuals were charged as alleged co-conspirators in the murder-for-hire plot. These included Deandre Dontrell Wilson (OTF Dede), David Brian Lindsey (Browneyez), Asa Houston (OTF Boogie), Kavon Grant (OTF Vonnie), and Keith "Flacka" Jones.
The trial officially commenced with jury selection beginning on August 20th, followed by opening statements shortly thereafter on August 24th. During the proceedings, prosecutors presented testimony from cooperating witnesses, including Kacey "OTF Jam" Hester, Kavon Grant, and Keith Jones, who testified against Lil Durk. Wilson and Lindsey stood trial alongside Durk, while Asa Houston is slated for a separate trial at a later date. Kavon Grant and Keith Jones were reportedly identified as the alleged hitmen, alongside OTF Dede, Browneyez, and OTF Boogie.
The defense for Lil Durk, led by attorney Marissa Goldberg, sought to shift the narrative and place the primary blame for the murder plot on co-defendant Kavon Grant, described as Lil Durk’s personal assistant. Grant had previously pleaded guilty to murder charges and agreed to cooperate with the prosecution against Lil Durk.
Throughout the trial, the rapper received significant support from his inner circle and the wider hip-hop community. Fans rallied outside the courthouse with "Free Durk" signs and apparel, while notable figures such as his father, Durk Banks Sr., fellow rappers G Herbo, Dreezy, Doodie Lo, MGK, and his wife India Royale, were present in court to show their solidarity.
